First Presbyterian Preschool provides an educational opportunity for children in a loving, caring Christian atmosphere. The preschool has been in operation since the fall of 1978. We began with 14 students and two teachers. We now have 134 children with 12 teachers, 3 teacher aides, a music director, assistant director and our director, Bonnie Woodard.
Children may come two days, three days or four days, depending on the program. Classes are available for 3, 4 and 5 year olds from both the congregation and the community. The school year runs from September through May and follows the Franklin Special School District calendar for snow days and Spring break. Preschool registration begins in February of each year.

Admission - A child must be three years old by September 30 and potty-trained to enter the school. Members of First Presbyterian Church and siblings of current students are given priority for enrollment at registration. Other places are filled in the order in which applications are received.
Program - The Preschool is in operation Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., September through May. Classes are limited to ten children to one teacher in the 4 and 5 year old classes. Classes are limited to 8 in the 3 year old classes.
3 Year Old Program: Children may be enrolled for either a 2-day session on Tuesday and Thursday; or a 3-day session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
4 Year Old Program: Children may be enrolled for a two-day session on Tuesday and Thursday; or a 3-day session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; or a 4-day session Tuesday through Friday.
5 Year Old Program: Children may be enrolled for a 3-day session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; or a 4-day session Tuesday through Friday.
Activities - The children participate in a variety of activities that promote skill development and school readiness, including: language development, skill-oriented group activities, “Readiness Centers,” pre-reading, pre-math, small motor skills, listening, and some handwriting. Art activities include: painting, cutting, gluing, and Playdough.
Music classes, taught by Julia McGirt, meet weekly for 30 minutes and study the basic elements of music. Folk songs, songs with movement, and biblical songs are learned. The Chapel program offers an opportunity to develop spiritually, and to learn the great truths of the Church. Taught by Chris Joiner (church Pastor), C. J. Thompson (Associate Pastor, Kim Joiner (Director of Children's Ministries) and Tiffany Bechtel (Preschool Committee Chair), the children hear the biblical stories, which convey God’s great love for us. This program meets once a week.
Staff - All teachers have college degrees. As part of their continuing education, all teachers take college credit hours during the summer or attend continuing education workshops throughout the year. The teachers and the director have First Aid and Child and Infant CPR certificates.
